Imagine a generation where young people, no matter their background, know how to budget, save, and invest; a generation that is armed with the confidence and understanding to take control of their financial futures, their careers and achieve their dreams.

Metro Atlanta has joined communities across the nation in the movement to incorporate financial literacy education and 21st century skills development as components of the core curriculum.

With the support of AT&T, the Chick-fil-A Foundation, Delta, SunTrust and other area businesses, Junior Achievement of Georgia is taking this one step further providing 6th-8th grade students the opportunity to not only learn about finances and careers, but for one day to transform into adults, becoming a leader in his or her household and town.

September of 2013, Atlanta Public Schools, DeKalb County Schools and Fulton County Schools and Marietta City Schools integrated Junior Achievement’s financial literacy and work readiness education into the core curriculum for middle school students.

The experience begins in the classroom with four weeks of JA-provided curriculum that culminates with a day at JA BizTown or JA Finance Park. Both centers are designed as interactive marketplaces representative of the local business community, including financial services, media, telecommunications, utilities, manufacturing and more. The centers are authentic and interactive to create a transformational experience for all students.

JA BizTown creates a unique opportunity where students are able to interact within a simulated macro-economy, and take on the role of employee, tax payer and consumer. During the visit to JA BizTown, students receive unique job assignments and work in teams at their assigned business. By the end of the simulation each student completes a day’s work, develops a personal budget, deposits a paycheck at the bank and makes purchasing decisions.

JA Finance Park gives students the rare opportunity to experience their personal financial futures first-hand. Upon entering the center, students receive a ‘life situation’ with job, income, education, and family scenarios. Based on their adult persona, students visit businesses in the simulation to gather information to make financial decisions, such as managing a household budget, using banking services, and making purchasing and investment decisions.

In the first semester of operation, the following outcomes are a selection of the survey results from students and volunteers:

After participating in JA BizTown or JA Finance Park...
Students understand why school and education are important factors for the lifestyles they want to live. 94%
Students see a strong connection between the decisions they make during the simulation and the real-life choices they will eventually have to make. 93%
Volunteers felt that the volunteer experience was personally rewarding. 98%
Volunteers would recommend volunteering with JA to friends and colleagues. 98%
