PRICEWATERHOUSECOOPERS AND SUTTON MIDDLE SCHOOL BRING BUSINESS EDUCATION TO STUDENTS IN 6TH, 7TH AND 8TH GRADE

This semester, JAMS’ students from Sutton Middle School were challenged to develop smart phone apps that would help teens and tweens acquire STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) skills. Working alongside volunteers from PricewaterhouseCoopers, groups of 6th, 7th and 8th graders collaborated and came up with innovative business ideas.
“The challenges change each semester, though all are designed to spark innovation and creative thinking,” said La Novia Meuse, director of programs for JA of Georgia. “It is exciting to watch the students grow and develop confidence and knowledge that will lead them on a path of opportunity,” said Meuse.
At the end of the program the students presented their project ideas to their peers through multimedia presentations and business plans that highlighted core concepts.
For many students this is the first time they have had the opportunity to interact with adults in a professional manner. This unique opportunity repeatedly proves to be a highlight of the program for many of the students. “The best part of JAMS was working with the volunteers,” said Saxon Danford, Sutton Middle School student and JAMS participant.
Currently more than 300 students are enrolled in the eight-week, after-school program. JAMS is offered as a partnership between JA of Georgia and various metro Atlanta schools.
