Junior Achievement

I participated in Junior Achievement as a student in 1980 and 1981. My first year I was Vice President of Marketing and we met in a building on the Lockheed campus in Marietta. During my second year I was President and we met in the current JA building on Abernathy Road in Sandy Springs.

My experience in Junior Achievement took the mystery out of running a business. Understanding the basics gave me the knowledge and courage to start my own small business; I was not intimidated by the accounting, finance, marketing, production and sales roles. This made it possible to begin a business and be able to perform these functions without initially hiring other employees, without relying on outside resources, and with very little capital. As my business grew and I hired employees, I had the knowledge and experience to monitor and direct these functions. The core functions of business are not that complex and when you understand them you are free to master the real complexities in business which are earning and retaining clients and, most importantly, making a profit.

I learned the basics in Junior Achievement and that knowledge has allowed me to operate a successful small business for 20 years.
